HPV Vaccine

HPV Vaccine

HPV (human papillomavirus) is an extremely common virus with more than 200 types, and 85% of people are said to be infected with it at least once in their lifetime.

HPV infection carries a risk of transmission through every form of sexual contact (mucosal contact), regardless of sex or role. At the same time, most infections cause no symptoms, so people can spread the infection without knowing it.

HPV has been linked to cancer and condyloma, and these diseases can be prevented by using a vaccine.

For those living far away, we offer telephone consultations and a delivery service.

What is the HPV Vaccine?

There is currently no medication that treats HPV once you are infected, so preventing it through vaccination is effective.

It can prevent the cancers that arise from HPV infection, and it is a highly effective vaccine for both men and women.

According to findings published by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in the United States, cases of cervical cancer among girls aged 13 to 19 fell by as much as 83 percent, and among those aged 20 to 24 they fell by 66 percent.

Cancers Arising from HPV Infection

Male genitals: penile cancer

Female genitals: cervical cancer, vulvar cancer and vaginal cancer

Common to both: oropharyngeal cancer and anal cancer

Recommended For

– Those aged 9 and over who want to reduce their risk of HPV infection

(Because HPV vaccination also helps prevent penile cancer, anal cancer, etc., Western countries recommend vaccination not only for women but also for men)

HPV Vaccination for Men

HPV vaccination is not only for women — it is also highly effective for men.

Mainly, the following 2 benefits can be expected.

– Prevention of diseases caused by HPV infection in the man himself (condyloma and cancers such as penile cancer)

– Reducing a partner’s risk of HPV infection by not becoming a source of infection yourself

Receiving the HPV vaccine helps protect both yourself and your partner!

In Japan, HPV vaccination is optional (self-pay vaccination) for women who are past the routine vaccination period and for all men.

Eligibility for Routine Vaccination

– Men

Not included in routine vaccination; optional vaccination at all ages.

– Women

Those from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 1st year of high school are eligible for routine vaccination.

The 1st dose of catch-up vaccination ended on March 31, 2025.

Prices

Prices are as follows.

HPV 9-valent Vaccine

Cost: 30,000 yen per dose (tax included)

Number of doses: 3 doses (or 2 doses)

Schedule: First dose, 2 months later, 6 months later (or first dose, 6 months later)

It has been reported that the HPV 9-valent vaccine can be expected to provide sufficient effectiveness even without receiving all 3 doses. (For more details, see here)

Our clinic also recommends a 2-dose regimen.

What does 9-valent mean?

There are three types of HPV vaccine—2-valent, 4-valent and 9-valent—and this number represents the number of types the vaccine protects against.

There are more than 180 types of HPV, and the diseases that may develop differ depending on the type of infection.

At our clinic,

– Prevention of condyloma is possible with either the 4-valent or 9-valent vaccine

– Compared to the 4-valent vaccine, the 9-valent vaccine offers a markedly higher preventive effect against cancer and condyloma (4-valent: approximately 60%, 9-valent: approximately 90%)

For these reasons, we have adopted the 9-valent HPV vaccine.
