M-Pox Test

M-pox, previously known as Monkeypox, is rapidly spreading around the world, primarily among MSM ー men who have sex with men.

There are cases of asymptomatic infections in Japan, where vaccines are not widespread.

In fact, participating in research is the only way to go through m-pox test currently in Japan.

We are able to provide m-pox testing for MSM from August 1, 2023 through the research conducted by the National Center for Global Health and Medicine.

In Japan, we are the only one in Kansai region that can test for m-pox in asymptomatic individuals, and one of only three places in Japan!

Price: 3,000 JPY (incl. tax)

This includes testings for three STDs, gonorrhea, chlamydia and m-pox each on three spots, the genitals, throat and anus.

Since the opening of our clinic, we have been offering gonorrhea and chlamydia testing with a special discount to PrEP purchasers, but it now includes m-pox testing at the same time.

Separate fees for the consultation will apply.

Suitable for those meeting all of the following:

– Those who have given written consent to participate in the research,

– MSM (men who have sex with men) over the age of 20 at the time of consent, and

– those who have had sexual intercourse within the past three months.

Contraindicated to:

– patients deemed inappropriate by the physician, or

– those who have symptoms suspicious of m-pox.

About the research

Research Name: Prospective Cohort Study on ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE of M-pox in Men Who Have Sex with Men (Abbreviation: M-pox Active Epidemiological Survey Research)

Leading Research Institution: National Center for Global Health and Medicine

Collaborative Research Institutions: Personal Health Clinic, Idaten Clinic

Cooperation in Research

– We ask everyone to fill out a medical questionnaire.

– We will check for symptoms on the body and request everyone to fill out a consent form.

– Samples will be taken from three parts: genitals, throat and anus for three types of tests for gonorrhea, chlamydia and m-pox. Note that testing only for m-pox is not available.

Personal name and address will be deleted in the study. Personal information is strictly managed to prevent leaks to the outside.

Purpose of Research

This research is aimed to detect m-pox infections in Japan early by conducting m-pox tests on asymptomatic individuals.

The purpose of this research also includes to conduct a survey on the demands for m-pox vaccination and to prepare for m-pox measures in Japan.

In this study, the m-pox vaccine is not provided.

Summary of This Article

– M-pox has been rapidly increasing since 2023. Originally reported mostly in West and Central Africa, it has recently spread, especially among MSM, even among those without a travel history abroad.

– M-pox can infect people through contact with the infected area even without sexual intercourse. Women and children may also be infected.

– After a 5-21 day incubation period (the time from infection to symptom onset), painful and itchy rashes appear on the face, limbs and torso. The currently prevalent m-pox is known to cause rashes in the genital and anal areas. There is no dedicated treatment, and symptomatic treatment is performed.

– In Japan, those suspected of having m-pox are tested through public health centers, but those without symptoms used to be not admitted to tests.

We are allowed to provide m-pox tests for MSM through research even when ASYMPTOMATIC. There are only three places in Japan where testing can be done for asymptomatic individuals, and in Kansai, it is only us.

What is M-Pox

M-pox originally had reports of onset in West and Central Africa.

It was discovered in 1958, and human infection was confirmed in 1970. Until now, the mainly known routes of infection to humans was from animals.

Reports even from non-endemic countries have been increasing since May 2022.

The current m-pox is konwn to differ from previous m-pox in two points. Firstly, the increase in reports in both endemic and other countries is unprecedented. And secondly, the mode of transmission is mostly human to human sexual contact, especially among MSM.

The WHO, World Health Organization, declared it an “International Public Health Emergency of Concern” as the spread of infection continues.

In Japan, the first patient was reported on July 25, 2022.

Since 2023, the number of cases has been increasing, and 188 cases have been confirmed in Japan as of July 7, 2023. However, the number of cases only includes those with symptoms, not those who are infected but asymptomatic. The number of cases may have been increasing continuously.

M-pox infects not only MSM but also women and children. Please be aware that the discrimination and stigma against specific groups, infected individuals, or those suspected of infection can lead to human rights violations.

Infection Routes and Symptoms

The following are considered to be the routes of human-to-human transmission of m-pox:

Infection Routes

– Contact with skin lesions, body fluids or blood

– Prolonged exposure to droplets during close face-to-face contact with infected individuals

– Infection through clothing or linen

According to previous reports, the incubation period of m-pox is 5 to 21 days (usually 7 to 14 days).

After the incubation period, symptoms begin like a common cold, followed by fever, headaches, swollen lymph nodes and muscle aches for a few days, then characteristic rashes (bumps) appear.

Previous cases of m-pox started with rashes on the face that spread throughout the body. But the outbreak since May 2022 especially in Europe and America has shown that rashes are often seen in the genitals and anus. Also, reportedly rashes may appear before flu-like symptoms.

In particular, it may be difficult to distinguish from other diseases’ rashes (such as measles, chickenpox, herpes, bacterial skin infections, scabies, etc.) in the early stages.

Current Main Symptoms

Symptoms and appearance rates (30% or higher) are summarized as…

– Rashes or skin symptoms (especially in the genital area): 95%

– Fever: 62%

– Swollen lymph nodes: 56%

– Fatigue or drowsiness: 41%

– Muscle pain: 31%

Those with symptoms that may indicate m-pox such as the one listed above may not be tested at our clinic.

If you have any questions, please contact us via our official LINE account.

Please ensure to take precautions such as wearing a face mask and/or covering the rash area with gauze if you notice symptoms that may indicate m-pox and are visiting a medical institution.

Progression and Treatment

M-pox heals on its own with all rashes becoming scabs in about 2 to 4 weeks after onset. Most cases are mild to moderate and heal naturally.

If it worsens, it can cause encephalitis, secondary bacterial infections in skin lesions, dehydration, bronchopneumonia, sepsis and/or other serious conditions.

There is no specific treatment for m-pox, and symptomatic treatment is provided to alleviate symptoms.

The smallpox vaccine is believed to be effective in preventing or reducing the severity of m-pox after exposure to the virus.

In Japan, clinical research systems are being established to administer vaccines to those who may have been exposed to the m-pox virus. Clinical research systems are also being prepared to administer therapeutic drugs to patients who have developed m-pox.
